Project Blue Light Iowa began in the small community of Charles City on September 1st, 2015. Modeled after the national concept of placing a blue light in the window to honor fallen officers, we began purchasing blue light bulbs with our own funds and giving them out free of charge to anyone who wanted one to display. The demand quickly grew and we started accepting donations to help purchase the lights.
Very shortly after this homegrown project began, we were contacted from individuals in communities across Iowa interested in distributing blue lights. Project Blue Light Iowa became a state-focused organization that travels to spread support and distribute lights. Dozens of communities later, we have given out over 22,000 light bulbs to date and have inspired similar projects in numerous states across the nation.
Project Blue Light Iowa relies on community involvement and individual initiative from representatives in their communities to have successful events. Events would not be possible without the volunteers that stop to help prepare the lights to be given away.
